TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound baseball team committed four errors, and No. 14 Whitworth took advantage of the miscues as the Pirates topped the Loggers, 5-2, on Sunday at Logger Field. The four errors match a season high for the Loggers.
Whitworth (17-4, 9-3 NWC) opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning, but the Loggers (9-14, 6-9 NWC) answered back in the bottom of the stanza. Nathan Backes led off with a double down the leftfield line, and he advanced to third on a sac bunt by Nickolas Alarcio. Ben Jones put Puget Sound on the board, 2-1, with an RBI double that plated Backes.
Whitworth pushed its lead to 5-1 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, when the Loggers managed one more run. Once again, Backes led off with a double, and he eventually came in to score on a sac fly by James Dejesus.
Backes finished with a season-high four hits for the Loggers. Starting pitcher Merle Rowan-Kennedy allowed only two earned runs in 5.2 innings while striking out four.
The Loggers host Pacific Lutheran for a non-conference bout on Wednesday, March 23, at 3 p.m.
