Hughes was huge

First baseman Ian Hughes busted out of a four-game slump by going 4-for-8 with a triple and two RBI in a doubleheader at Claremont-M-S on Feb. 25. Hughes had one hit in 12 at-bats entering the CMS games.

Premium pitching

The Loggers' pitching staff has been solid this season, the one true blemish being a loss against Pacific Lutheran in which the Lutes plated 13 earned runs. Outside of that game, Puget Sound pitchers have combined for a 3.26 ERA in 94.0 innings. Joshua Zavisubin has worked a team-high 24.0 innings in four starts, and carries a 4.13 ERA into the weekend. Tyler Huling has a 3.00 ERA in three appearances (two starts) this season. Merle Rowan-Kennedy, Eric Crispell, and Michael Warnick combined to allow only two hits in a 3-1 win at CMS on Feb. 25.

Non-conference thriller

The Loggers and Pioneers clashed in a non-conference contest on Feb. 12, as the Loggers pulled off a thrilling comeback win, 10-9. The Loggers entered the home half of the seventh inning trailing, 9-3, but they ended the frame within one run of the Pioneers. The Loggers took the lead in the eighth inning. With Dejesus and Hughes on first and second and one out, Mason Quinlan singled to load the bases. Moyes came through with a clutch two-run double to put the Loggers in front, 10-9.

Scouting Lewis & Clark (2-7, 2-4 NWC)

The Pioneers look to bounce back this weekend after getting swept in a three-game series at Pacific Lutheran last week. Lewis & Clark batters have struck out fewer times than any team in the NWC (41), and the Pioneers' .301 batting averages is second in the conference. However, Lewis & Clark's 6.78 ERA is second-to-last in the NWC. Sean Shepherd leads the team with a .432 batting average, and Tommy Massari has a team-high nine RBI.
