TACOMA, Washington – Joe Brennan was solid in his third start of the season, but the Puget Sound baseball team lost its rubber match against Whitworth, 6-2, on Logger Field Monday afternoon.
Brennan allowed just two earned runs through six innings, but he took the tough-luck loss against the Pirates (14-10, 6-9 NWC). The freshman allowed six hits, two walks, and struck out three.
The Loggers (9-12, 5-7 NWC) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after Matt Shelhamer and Nolan Wiler began the frame with consecutive doubles to left field. Whitworth evened the score in the fourth inning, and claimed the lead with a run in the fifth. The Pirates rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
The Loggers made things interesting in the ninth inning when Corey Roberts led off with a single and Mason Quinlan reached base on a fielding error by the third baseman. However, the Pirates tallied three consecutive outs to hold on for the win.
Wiler finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate for his fourth multi-hit game of the season.
Puget Sound heads to Lewis & Clark for a doubleheader against the Pioneers on Wednesday, March 29, starting at 12 p.m.
