TACOMA, Washington – Ian Hughes totaled four hits and three RBI, including a walk-off single, as the Puget Sound baseball team split a doubleheader against first-place Willamette at Logger Field on Saturday.
Puget Sound 3, Willamette 2
The Loggers (11-17, 7-12 NWC) entered the ninth inning with a 2-1 lead, but the Bearcats (22-12, 14-6 NWC) scored the game-tying run with two outs in the top of the ninth.
James Dejesus led off the home half of the ninth inning with a single up the middle, and Nolan Wiler moved Dejesus into scoring position with a sac bunt. Ian Hughes came in to pinch-hit for Jordan Hirae, and the senior delivered with a walk-off single to centerfield.
The Loggers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Dejesus. Puget Sound got another run in the third inning after Cal Muramaru singled and took two more bases on an errant pickoff throw. Muramaru easily scored on an errant throw by the catcher, who fielded a ground ball off the bat of Mason Quinlan.
Joshua Zavisubin took a no-decision for the Loggers, despite a solid start. The junior allowed just one run, three hits, and a walk through six innings.
Dejesus finished with three hits for the third time this season, and Muramaru collected his third multi-hit game of the season.
Puget Sound 4, Willamette 7
Ian Hughes stayed hot by going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI, but the Bearcats scored four runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 7-4 win.
Already leading, 1-0, after one inning, Ian Hughes ripped a two-run double down the left-field line to score Jack Gries and Makoa Mau. Gries reached base with a single and Mau followed with a double to right field.
Willamette got on the board with a run in the third inning. Things turned south for the Loggers following a rain delay in the fifth inning, as the Bearcats plated four runs in the sixth. The Loggers got a run back in the home half of the sixth inning courtesy of an RBI single by AJ Koch.
The Loggers and Bearcats conclude their series on Sunday, April 9, at 12 p.m.
