FOREST GROVE, Oregon – The pitching was solid, but the Puget Sound baseball team still couldn't find a way to get non-conference wins over Willamette and Pacific Saturday. Pacific hosted both games.
Puget Sound 4, Willamette 5
After rallying to take a lead in the top of the ninth inning, the Loggers were one strike away from sealing their first win of the season. However, Willamette squeaked by with a 5-4 non-conference win in the first of two games Saturday.
The teams entered the ninth inning in a 2-2 tie, but Sean Rooney led off the top off the inning with a double for Puget Sound. Mason Quinlan provided the go-ahead hit with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Ryota Nishino gave Puget Sound an insurance run when his base knock plated Quinlan.
In the bottom of the stanza, Willamette loaded the bases with two outs. A bases-loaded walk got the Bearcats within a run, but their next batter faced two strikes in the count with the game on the line. In the big spot, Willamette's Cole Pursell hit a two-run walkoff single.
Puget Sound 0, Pacific 2
Tyler Brazelton went 2-for-4 at the plate, marking his second multi-hit game in four starts this season.
The Loggers take on Whitman Sunday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m. in Forest Grove, Oregon.
