Loggers Row Strong Against Vikings

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - After two weeks away from competition, the Puget Sound Loggers faced off against rival Western Washington on Saturday at Lake Samish near Bellingham, Wash.  The Viking women swept the Loggers but the Puget Sound men took two of three races in strong fashion.

In the women's races between the two nationally ranked programs, the Viking women showed their comfort with their home course, as the top-ranked shell in NCAA Division II rowed to a seven second victory over the NCAA Division III fifth-ranked Loggers.  WWU also won the 2nd Varsity 8 race and the 3rd Varsity 8/Novice 8 race to collect the regatta sweep.

On the men's side, the Logger men rowed to a 1.3 second victory over the Vikings in the Varsity 8 race, covering the 2000m course in 6:15.70.  The Loggers also posted a victory in the Novice 4, holding off WWU by over five seconds.  The Viking men collected their only win of the morning in the Varsity 4, earning a nearly 10 second victory over the maroon and white.

Both the Loggers and the Vikings, as well as the rest of the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference, will head down to Vancouver, Wash. next weekend for the NCRC Championships.  The Logger men will be looking for their third straight conference title while the Puget Sound women will be looking to stop WWU, who will be rowing for a sixth straight NCRC crown.

Leah Shamlian is ready to start her first collegiate rowing season this spring at Puget Sound. The freshman quickly recognized the celebrated history of the program and hopes to help continue the culture of success that Puget Sound crew has established over the past decade. “My expectations for myself are the same as usual: improve, perform to the best of my ability, and build team unity. As a team, the women are hoping to get to NCAA Championships, a goal that I will work hard to contribute to.”
