Logger Football Participates In MLK Day Of Service

The Puget Sound football team participated in the Fifth Annual MLK Day of Service on Monday at the Hilltop Urban Garden (HUG). The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.

Over 35 players and coaches made the trip to the Hilltop Urban Garden to help clean up and renovate the public space. The Hilltop Urban Garden is a sustainable local environment for low-income families to grow food.

"There are more important things than just school and football. Its great to be able to give back to our community, our fans and the people that support us," said team captain Max Mirande. "To be able to give back, especially with all your teammates, was a great bonding experience and really meant a lot to us."

The Loggers cleared the weeds and overgrown plants while also turning over the soil to make room for more plants in the small community garden.

While Logger football took care of this particular project, hundreds of Puget Sound faculty, staff and students participated in a variety of projects in Tacoma.

After an injury left him on the sideline for his freshman year, Kupono Park has fought back to earn the starting role at running back for the Loggers this year. While Kupono is known for his work ethic, he is also known as one of the funniest members of the football team. “Being a Logger means being able to hack hack and chop chop your way through life.”
