Max Washam is one of 27 Puget Sound football student-athletes traveling to China (May 15-23), where the Loggers will learn the culture, lead youth football clinics, and compete against the Shanghai Titans (2017 American Football Leage of China Champions). Washam shares the Loggers' early portion of the trip to China.
A little over a year ago we sat in Upper Gym listening intently to Coach Thomas as he discussed the opportunity to become the first college football team ever to play a game in China. We all jumped at the idea that we could play internationally, and we immediately told him that we were in. For most of our team, the trip to China is a mini version of studying abroad - which we normally can't take advantage of due to football. Since that talk in Upper Gym, we have been constantly thinking about traveling to China and getting to play football overseas. For the past few weeks, the 27 student-athletes who made the trip have been practicing and making sure we have everything needed to have an amazing experience. It is a great way to start off our 2017 season.
With all that being said, Monday, May 15 finally arrived. That morning we boarded the bus and were off to the airport. After arriving a few hours early, the Loggers were finally China bound on an 11-hour flight. Upon arriving to China, we met up with our tour guides, Leo and Iowa, who took us to our first Chinese dinner. The food was delicious, but they weren't kidding when they said it was spicy! Unfortunately, it's off to bed now, but tomorrow our adventure continues in the Forbidden City!
