JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. – The Puget Sound men's golf team was back on the links this week for the three-round West Cup in Jurupa Valley, Calif. The Loggers placed 11th out of 15 teams in the tournament with Matt Kitto pacing the squad.
Kitto was the Loggers top finisher in the tournament that featured 88 golfers. Kitto took 19th overall as he was eight-over after the third round. Kitto shot a pair of rounds at one-over on the bookend rounds. In the second round he was six-over par.
Adam Bean was next on the leaderboard for the Loggers in 25th. He was just two strokes back of Kitto, firing a 225 (+10) for the tournament. His best round came in opening 18 holes when he was just one-over par.
Ricky Howard took 41st and finished 14-over par. He saved his best round for last when shot a 74 (+3) and jumped 15 spots up the leaderboard. Derek Wilson took 63rd to round out the Logger scoring with a 234 (+21), improving by one stroke in each round.
The Loggers finished 53-over par as a team to take 11th. Their best round came in the first round of day one with a 299 (+15). They followed it up with a 305 (+21) in the second trip through 18 holes on the first day and then fired a 301 (+17) to finish up the tournament. They sat in 12th as a team after the first two rounds but jumped over Pacific Lutheran to 11th with their 301 in the final round.
La Verne and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tied for the team title as both teams finished 28-over. David Gazzolo of UC Riverside took medalist honors with a six-under 207.
Both Logger teams will be off this weekend but will take on their conference foes in the Northwest Conference Spring Classic on Apr. 6-7.
