Holmes, Yarbro Put Up Big Numbers In Loss At George Fox
NEWBERG, Ore. – A close, 40-minute battle went to the home team as the Puget Sound men's basketball team fell 77-74 at George Fox on Friday. Riggs Yarbro had his second consecutive double-double and Rex Holmes had his third 20-plus point performance in four games in the loss.
Neither team led by double digits in the contest with the lead changing hands six times. The Bruins (9-6, 4-2 NWC) led by as many as eight points while the Loggers (6-10, 1-6 NWC) largest lead was three.
Yarbro had 18 points and 11 rebounds to help lead the Loggers. Holmes, a fellow senior, had 21 points to lead all players in the game. Dan Cheledinas added 16 points and seven boards to the effort.
The Loggers trailed in the earlygoings but fought back to take a 25-24 lead with 3:31 left to play in the first half. The teams traded blows over the final three-and-a-half minutes and went into halftime tied at 31-31.
George Fox scored the first five points in the second half and led the rest of the way as they held off the Loggers for the win.
The Loggers pulled within two with just over one minute to go on a pair of free throws from Cheledinas but the Bruins responded with a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach.
The Bruins used some hot shooting in the second half to keep the Loggers at bay. The Bruins shot 56.7 percent in the second half, including a 4-for-8 mark from three-point range. Anthony Sanchez led GFU with 17 points while AJ Grant had 14 points and Sean Atkins added in 11.
The Loggers were just 3-of-18 beyond the three-point arc and shot 37.7 percent in the game.
The Loggers will look to buck their three-game losing streak tomorrow when they visit Pacific at 8 p.m.
