PARKLAND, Washington – Carlos Mancasola scored a season-high 29 points and Kohl Meyer notched his second double-double of the season as the Puget Sound men's basketball team outlasted Trinity (Texas), 105-99, in double overtime during the first day of the Pacific Lutheran Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday night.
Friday marks the Loggers' (2-2) first double-overtime game since Feb. 23, 2008, when the Loggers beat Willamette, 127-121. Puget Sound also eclipsed the 100-point mark for the second time this season. The Loggers reached the century mark once during the 2014-15 season.
Mancasola shot 7-for-12 from the floor and 5-for-8 from 3-point change. He also connected on 10 of 13 free-throw attempts. Meyer netted 21 points to go with 13 rebounds and seven assists.
Eric Rauch scored a career-high 21 points by connecting on five of 10 3-pointers while shooting 6-for-7 from the charity stripe.
The Loggers shot a season-best 38.2 percent from behind the arc and 40.3 percent from the field. On the other end of the floor, Trinity (0-4) shot just 16.7 percent from distance. Trinity also turned the ball over 24 times, 10 more miscues than the Loggers' 14.
Puget Sound was clinging to a 77-74 lead late in the second half when Trinity's Khambrel Roach hit a game-tying 3-pointer with two seconds left in regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Trinity raced out to an 87-79 lead in the first overtime, but Mancasola and Meyer combined for eight consecutive points to even the score and force a second overtime.
Keith Shattuck (18 points) gave the Loggers their first lead of second overtime, 90-89, with a 3-pointer just 30 seconds into the period. Trinity responded with a layup, but Mancasola's 3-pointer with 3:40 on the clock gave the Loggers a 93-91 edge and Puget Sound never surrendered the lead from there.
The Loggers wrap up the Thanksgiving Tournament against No. 17 Chicago on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 2 p.m.
