TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound men's basketball team held a late lead against No. 10 St. Thomas, but ultimately fell to the defending national champions, 78-74, to wrap up the McArthur Classic in the Memorial Fieldhouse on Saturday evening.
Carlos Mancasola and Jimmy Wohrer both finished the game with 23 points to lead all scorers. The two Loggers made seven three-pointers combined. Mancasola had a three-point shot, which would have given the Loggers a lead with nine seconds left, bounce off the rim. Kohl Meyer scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds to record a third consecutive double double.
The Loggers (2-1) jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first five minutes, never backing down from the nationally ranked Tommies (2-1). St. Thomas came back to take a 28-25 lead with eight minutes left in the first half, but Puget Sound would hold a 41-37 lead at halftime.
The home team came out of the break with the same tenacity, holding an edge for most of the period. With 7:14 left, the Tommies tied the game, 63-63. The two teams battled back and forth, exchanging baskets for six minutes. With 52 seconds left, the Loggers clung to a 74-73 lead. St. Thomas' Michael Hannon was fouled on a three-point try, and sunk all three free throws to give the visitors a 76-74 lead. After coming up empty on the offensive end, the Loggers got the defensive stop they needed. Holding the ball with 23 seconds left, Puget Sound ran an offensive set which got Mancasola an open look from beyond the arc. The senior's shot bounced off the rim, and the Tommies recorded a defensive rebound to secure the victory with nine seconds remaining.
