Five score in double figures as Loggers take down Crusaders

TACOMA, Washington – Five players scored in double figures, as the Puget Sound men's basketball team defeated the University of Dallas, 74-73, on Friday evening in its first game of the PLU Thanksgiving Classic.

Kohl Meyer scored 15 points to lead Puget Sound, while also tallying six assists. Carlos Mancasola had 13 points, while Timmy Saunders had 12. Jeremiah Hobbs chipped in 11 points, and Zach Miller recorded 10 points.

After the Crusaders (1-3) went up 3-0, the Loggers (3-1) rattled off 11 consecutive points in the first three minutes of the game. Dallas held a 40-34 edge at halftime.

The Loggers came out of the break with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 42-42. Puget Sound eventually built a nine-point lead, holding that margin for most of the half. However, Dallas slowly chipped away, fighting back to take a 69-68 lead with 3:21 remaining. With 1:06 left, Timmy Saunders was fouled and calmly stepped to the line and sunk his two free throws to put the Loggers up 74-73. The Puget Sound defense was able to keep the Crusaders from scoring in the final minute to hold onto the win.

Puget Sound shot 53.8 percent (28-for-52) from the field, while the Crusaders shot 53.4 percent (31-for-58). The Loggers were 8-for-16 (50.0 percent) from beyond the arc. Dallas was 6-for-16 for three (37.5 percent). The Loggers were outrebounded by a 29-27 edge.

Puget Sound will next take on Whittier on Saturday, November 26, at 2 p.m. to wrap up the PLU Thanksgiving Classic.
