Men's basketball returns to action in Whitworth Classic

TACOMA, Washington – It has been quite the wait, but the Puget Sound men's basketball team is set to return to the hardwood in the Whitworth Men's Classic presented by Quality Inn Oakwood, Dec. 29-30. The Loggers tipoff against Calvin on Friday, Dec. 29, at 6 p.m., and then play Wisconsin-Stout Saturday, Dec. 30, at 4 p.m.

Early December

The Loggers' last game was at home against No. 1 Whitman, Dec. 2. Puget Sound nearly upset the top-ranked team in the country, but came up short, 111-108. The Loggers' Dec. 18 game at Warner Pacific was cancelled following the tragic train derailment just outside of Tacoma.

 

Among the nation's best

Although the Loggers haven't played in weeks, they still rank among the nation's best in several team statistics. Puget Sound is sixth in points per game (101.6), fourth in steals per game (14.9), and seventh in total 3-pointers made (120).

 

Wohrer's way

Jimmy Wohrer leads the NWC in scoring with 23.0 points per game. He achieves this mark despite playing a modest 21.3 minutes per game. Wohrer is tied for 15th in NCAA D-III for 3-pointers made (37).

 

Not feeling sheepish

Freshman Zion Shepherd had the best game of his season against No. 1 Whitman. Shepherd scored 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor, and he added nine boards and a pair of steals.

 

Walk this way

Walker Shibley-Styer scored all 18 of his points from 3-point range against No. 1 Whitman, shooting 6-for-11 from distance.

 

Receiving votes

Puget Sound has received votes in consecutive weeks for the D3hoops.com Top 25 national poll.

 

National test

The Loggers are 1-2 against nationally-ranked teams so far this year. Puget Sound beat No. 15 Claremont-M-S, 87-74, but lost to No. 13 Whitworth (95-84), and nearly upset No. 1 Whitman (111-108).

 

Scouting Calvin (3-6)

A Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association member from Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Knights have won two of their last three games following a three-game losing stream. Calvin is scoring 81.0 points per game, but surrendering 84.2. Luke Morrison is the team's leading scorer with 15.0 points per game, followed by Austin Bykerk (11.1) and Michael Wilks (10.3).

 

Scouting Wisconsin-Stout (6-3)

A Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member from Menomonie, Wisconsin, the Blue Devils carry a four-game winning streak to Spokane, Washington, this weekend. Isaac Elliot leads the team in scoring with 16.1 points per game, and Sam Ortmann follows with 12.8. The Blue Devils are very efficient shooting the ball, with a 48.5 field-goal percentage and 39.7 3-point percentage. However, rebounding is a weak spot, as Stout averages just 31.7 boards per game.
