MCMINNVILLE, Oregon – The University of Puget Sound men's soccer team defeated Linfield 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Loggers (8-5, 6-2 NWC) took an early lead in the 11th minute. Sam Zisette crossed the ball in from the right flank. Josh Sonico was waiting in front of the net to head the ball past the keeper and give Puget Sound a 1-0 lead.
Sonico and Zisette connected again in the second half. In the 63rd minute, Sonico fed Zisette the ball. The senior beat one defender and buried his shot to give the Loggers a cushion.
Linfield (7-7, 3-5 NWC) entered the match with an NWC-leading 28 goals scored. The Loggers defense was able to stymie the Wildcats, earning their second shutout of the year.
Puget Sound outshot Linfield (12-9), while the Wildcats took more corner kicks (5-2). Sonico led the squad with four shots, while goalkeeper Daniel Kirsch (8-4) earned the victory, making three saves.
Puget Sound next visits Willamette on Sunday, October 18. The game is set to kick-off at 2:30 p.m.
