SALEM, Oregon – The University of Puget Sound men's soccer team defeated Willamette 1-0 in double overtime on Sunday afternoon.
The Loggers (9-5, 7-2 NWC) dominated the first half, outshooting the Bearcats (3-10-1, 2-7 NWC) 11-3 in the first half. However, Puget Sound was unable to find the back of the net. The second half began to swing the other way, but neither team was able to break through.
Puget Sound outshot Willamette in the first overtime 3-1, but with no goals scored, the two teams moved on to a second overtime period. In the 105th minute, a long ball by the Loggers was mishit by a Bearcat defender. The ball caromed off the post and into the net, giving Puget Sound the victory.
The Loggers outshot the Bearcats 19-14, while also taking more corner kicks (5-1). Sam Zisette led the squad with four shots, while goalkeeper Daniel Kirsch (8-4) earned the shutout victory while making six saves.
Puget Sound will next host Whitman on Saturday, October 24. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
