TACOMA, Washington – The Loggers dropped a pair of games to No. 25 Whitworth on Sunday afternoon. Puget Sound lost, 2-0, before falling 8-1.
Erica Gott recorded the lone run batted in for the Loggers (9-20, 3-16 NWC) on Sunday. Kristi Nagamine, Amber Popovich, and Mckenna Johnson each had two hits, while Haley Gray and Jaci Young each recorded a hit on the day.
Whitworth 2, Puget Sound 0
The first game on Sunday turned out to be a duel in the circle between Jaci Young and Makayla Lefever. Each pitcher scattered one hit through the first three innings. In the fourth inning, Whitworth went up 2-0 on a 2-RBI double by Michelle Silva.
The Loggers responded by getting a runner aboard, but they could not capitalize. Each team got one further hit in the final three innings, with the final score, 2-0, in favor of the Pirates.
Jaci Young (3-9) threw a complete game, allowing just four hits. She allowed two runs and struck out four.
Whitworth 8, Puget Sound 1
The Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. They added three additional runs in the fifth inning on a three-run home run by Shannon Wessel.
Whitworth added two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Mckenna Johnson began the bottom of the inning with a single, and advanced to second on a groundout. Erica Gott next came up to bat and crushed a ball to right center fence, cruising into second base and allowing Johnson to come around and score.
Erica Gott (5-6) took the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) in 5.1 innings. Kayla Andrus threw the final 1.2 innings, allowing two runs while striking out one.
The Loggers will next travel to Lewis & Clark to make up a single game on Friday, April 8. The game is scheduled to begin a 3 p.m.
