CLAREMONT, California – The Loggers split their doubleheader with Pomona-Pitzer (2-2) on Friday. Puget Sound won 5-0 in its first game of the 2017 season. The team then fell 5-2 in the second game of the double header.
Erica Gott led the Loggers (1-1) with three RBI, while Jessica Gott went 4-for-7 on the day with an RBI. Jenna Llamas had two hits and recorded an RBI, and Kristi Nagamine had an RBI. Jaci Young, Amber Popovich, Haley Gray, and Kasey Stern each recorded hits in the doubleheader.
Puget Sound 5, Pomona-Pitzer 0
Jaci Young threw a complete game shutout, as the Loggers started the season 1-0.
Young began the game at bat, and ended up hitting a single. She moved over to second on an Amber Popovich sacrifice bunt, before Jessica Gott doubled to right field to bring around the first run of the game.
The Loggers extended their lead to 2-0 in the third inning. Erica Gott singled, and moved to third on a single by Jessisa Gott and a fielder's choice. Kristi Nagamine then came to the plate and singled through the left side to bring Gott home.
Two runs were added to the visitor's lead in the fourth inning, with Erica Gott hitting a double, allowing Popovich and Young to score. Another run was added in the sixth, with Erica Gott picking up another RBI. The Logger defense held firm, allowing Puget Sound to pick up the victory.
Jaci Young (1-0) threw a complete game to earn her first victory of the year. The senior scattered five hits, while walking one and striking out two in 7.0 innings.
Pomona-Pitzer 5, Puget Sound 2
The Loggers' late inning come back fell short in game two, as the visitors scored two runs in the seventh inning.
The Sagehens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Loggers would settle down and hold Pomona-Pitzer scoreless for the next four innings. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the home team added three runs to extend their lead to 5-0.
In the top of the seventh inning, Puget Sound had a rally, with Jessica Gott and Haley Gray scoring. Freshman Jenna Llamas recorded her first career RBI in the inning. However, the Loggers could only push across two runs, and would ultimately fall, splitting the doubleheader.
The Loggers will take on Chapman on Saturday, February 11. The doubleheader will be held at La Verne due to weather, and is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
