TUCSON, Arizona – The Puget Sound softball team swept a pair of games on their first day of a five-game swing in Arizona. The Loggers took down Wisconsin-Platteville, 11-3, in six innings, before defeating Suffolk, 7-4, in the nightcap.
Puget Sound 11, Wisconsin-Platteville 3
The Pioneers scored first, going up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a Jessy Tanel RBI single. They would add another run in the bottom of the third inning.
The Loggers took the lead in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to go up 4-2. Jaci Young hit a 3-RBI double to help the cause. Wisconsin-Platteville would get one run back to cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but Puget Sound used an explosive sixth inning to take control of the game. The Loggers scored seven runs, with runs batted in recorded by Kristi Nagamine, Amber Popovich, Jenna Llamas, Jessica Gott, Jaci Young, and Haley Gray.
Jessica Gott (2-1) earned the complete game victory for Puget Sound. She allowed three runs (zero earned) in 6.0 innings, while striking out four.
Puget Sound 7, Suffolk 4
The Rams jumped out in front, scoring all four of their runs in the top of the first inning. The Loggers began to chip away in the second inning, scoring two runs and cutting the deficit to 4-2.
Puget Sound had a big fifth inning to take the lead, which they would not relinquish. The Loggers scored five runs in the inning to take a 7-4 lead.
The Loggers relied on their defense the rest of the way, including getting the final out of the game when Haley Gray threw out a Ram trying to take third on a ball in the dirt.
Erica Gott (4-2) earned the complete game victory, her third complete game of the year. The junior threw 7.0 innings, allowing four runs, and striking out six.
The Loggers will next play Augsburg in the Tucson Invitational. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15.
