Jessica Gott's home run not enough, Loggers edged on walk-off

TUCSON, Arizona – Jessica Gott hit her second home run of the year, but the Puget Sound softball team fell to Augsburg, 5-4, on Wednesday afternoon.

Jessica Gott led the Loggers (8-7), going 2-for-3, with three runs batted in. Kaitlyn Webster also recorded an RBI, while Kristi Nagamine was 3-for-3 on the day. Amber Popovich, Haley Gray, Mckenna Johnson, and Jessica Shimoda each recorded a hit for Puget Sound.

The Loggers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Gott. The Auggies (7-0) tied the game up in the bottom of the second inning, but Puget Sound retook the lead in the following half-inning. Kaitlyn Webster hit an RBI double to score Haley Gray and put the Loggers up 2-1.

Augsburg took the lead back again in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs. In the top of the seventh, Jessica Gott hit a two-run home run to put the Loggers back in front, 4-3. However, in the bottom of the seventh, the Auggies scored two runs on a walk-off single to earn the victory and stay undefeated.

Kasey Stern threw the first 4.0 innings for the Loggers, giving up one run, while striking out two. Jessica Gott (2-2) took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) in 2.2 innings of work.

The Loggers will wrap up the Tucson Invitational with two games on Thursday, March 16. Puget Sound first meets Greenville at 10 a.m.
