Gray hits home run, Loggers swept in doubleheader

WEST LINN, Oregon – The Puget Sound softball team fell in a pair of games to George Fox on Saturday afternoon. The Loggers fell, 11-3, in the first game, before losing, 9-6, in the nightcap.

Haley Gray and Kristi Nagamine led the way for the Loggers (10-9, 3-5 NWC) with three runs batted in each. Amber Popovich recorded two runs batted in for the team.

George Fox 11, Puget Sound 3

The Bruins (10-6, 6-4 NWC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Loggers responded with two runs of their own in the top of the second. Kristi Nagamine recorded a run batted in. George Fox extended the lead back to five runs, at 7-2, in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run home run by Kimi Ito. The Bruins added another run in the fourth inning.

The Loggers got one run back in the sixth inning, when Amber Popovich hit a sacrifice fly to score Mckenna Johnson. In the bottom of the sixth, the Bruins scored three runs on four hits, putting George Fox up 11-3, and giving them the victory.

Jaci Young (3-3) took the loss, giving up eight runs (seven earned) in 3.2 innings. Kasey Stern threw the final 1.2 innings, giving up three runs, while striking out one.    

George Fox 9, Puget Sound 6

The Bruins took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the second inning. George Fox then took control of the game in the third inning, when the Bruins recorded five runs.

The Loggers got two runs back in the top of the fourth inning on a Kristi Nagamine two-RBI single, but the Bruins scored one run to go up 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Puget Sound scored another run in the sixth inning when Amber Popovich hit an RBI single, but George Fox once again responded with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning.

Puget Sound put together a rally in the top of the seventh. Haley Gray hit a three-run home run to narrow the gap to 9-6, but were unable to get any closer, and ultimately fell.

Erica Gott (5-3) took the loss, giving up six runs in 2.2 innings pitched. Jessica Gott threw the final 3.1 innings, allowing three runs while striking out two.

The Loggers will take on George Fox for another doubleheader on Sunday, March 19. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
