TACOMA, Washington – Jaci Young threw a complete game, and four Loggers recorded runs batted in, as the Puget Sound softball team defeated Lewis & Clark, 8-3, on Tuesday afternoon. The scheduled second game of the doubleheader is currently in the bottom of the second inning, and will be resumed next week.
Haley Gray (2-for-4) and Kristi Nagamine (2-for-3) each had two RBI to lead the Loggers (11-14, 4-11 NWC). Mckenna Johnson (2-for-4) and Jessica Shimoda (0-for-1) each picked up a run batted in as well.
The Pioneers (3-16, 3-12 NWC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Loggers responded with three runs of their own in the home half of the inning. Gray recorded her two runs batted in in the inning with a single to right field with the bases loaded.
In the fourth inning, L&C scored a run to close the score to 3-2, but once again Puget Sound responded in the bottom of the inning, when Nagamine and Johnson each picked up an RBI. The Loggers added two insurance runs in the fifth inning with an RBI walk by Shimoda, and a RBI single by Nagamine. The Pioneers scored one run in the top of the seventh, but the home team's defense would hold firm, as Puget Sound picked up the victory.
Jaci Young (4-5) earned the complete game win. She allowed three runs (two earned) in seven innings of work, while allowing just six hits and striking out four batters.
The two teams attempted to play the scheduled second game of the doubleheader, but continuous rain forced a suspension of play in the bottom of the second inning. The game will be resumed at Pacific on Wednesday, April 5 at 4 p.m.
The Loggers will next travel to Whitworth for a four-game series this weekend. The first game, on Saturday, April 1, is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
