Softball set to finish games with Pioneers, Boxers in Forest Grove

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound softball team is set to complete a pair of suspended Northwest Conference games this week. The Loggers will complete a game against Lewis & Clark, before finishing a game against Pacific. Both games will be at Pacific.

The plan

The Loggers and Pioneers are currently in the bottom of the second inning. Puget Sound currently leads, 2-0, and has a runner on first base in the inning. In the second game, Puget Sound and Pacific and tied, 0-0, and the Loggers have a runner on second base.

Puget Sound's last weekend

The Loggers (11-18, 4-14 NWC) traveled to Spokane to take on NWC-leading Whitworth for a four-game series. Puget Sound fell in all four games, including getting edged, 7-6, in a walk-off in the final game on Sunday. Jaci Young hit a 3-run home run in the game.

Logger leaders

Jessica Gott leads the squad with a .370 batting average. The junior has nine doubles, a triple, and three home runs, while recording 21 runs batted in. Jenna Llamas (.350) and Kristi Nagamine (.325) both hit above .300 as well. Jessica Gott, Erica Gott, Haley Gray, Jaci Young, and Kaitlyn Webster have all hit home runs for the Loggers, with Young leading the way with four. She is also tied for second on the squad with 15 RBI. Nagamine and Erica Gott each have 15 runs batted in as well. Jaci Young (4-7) leads the Loggers with a 3.93 ERA in the circle. She has struck out 33 batters in 73.0 innings pitched. Erica Gott (4-7) has a 5.36 earned run average, with 32 strikeouts in 64.0 IP.

Scouting the Pioneers (5-20, 5-16 NWC)

Lewis & Clark College most recently split four games against Willamette after falling in two games against Linfield. The team hits .254 as a team, led by Stephanie Garcia (.354). Katelyn Duilio (.333), Lindsay Yearman (.333), and Lisa Kumasaka (.307) also hit above .300 for the Pioneers. Yearman has a team-high two home runs, and is tied for the team-high with nine RBI. Jenai Rojo also has nine runs batted in. Kalin Rooney (3-8) has a 3.22 earned run average. She has struck out 30 batters in 69.2 innings pitched. Kaili Akimseu (2-7) has a 4.49 ERA, with 40 K's in 52.1 IP.

Scouting the Boxers (7-22, 5-14)

Pacific University most recently went 1-3 against George Fox after splitting a doubleheader against Pacific Lutheran. The Boxers hit .246 as a team, led by Becca Bernard (.321). Amanda Machado (.294) leads the squad with 13 runs batted in and has also hit two home runs. Morgan Bookout (.192) has a team-high three homers. Ashley Martin (6-8) has a 3.47 earned run average, with 39 strikeouts in 36.2 innings pitched.  

Student-Athlete of the Week

Jessica Gott earned the NWC Player of the Week for her play against Pacific. She hit .583 in the three games, including a three-run home run in extra innings which proved the difference in the first game of the series. Jaci Young was named the Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week after throwing 12 scoreless innings, including a complete game shutout, to open the season. 

Under the sun

The Loggers went 4-1 in Arizona during Spring Break, scoring 40 runs in five games. This was not the first time the Loggers had success in the hot weather this year. Puget Sound opened the 2017 season with a six-game trip to Southern California. The team split double headers with Pomona-Pitzer, Chapman, and Occidental.
