Softball heads to Forest Grove to finish games with L&C, Pacific

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound softball team is set to complete a pair of suspended Northwest Conference games this week. The Loggers will complete a game against Lewis & Clark, before finishing a game against Pacific. Both games will be at Pacific.

The plan

The Loggers and Pioneers are currently in the bottom of the second inning. Puget Sound currently leads, 2-0, and has a runner on first base in the inning. In the second game, Puget Sound and Pacific and tied, 0-0, and the Loggers have a runner on second base.

Puget Sound's last weekend

The Loggers (11-22, 4-18 NWC) hosted Linfield for a four-games series. The Wildcats won all four games. Kristi Nagamine, Jessica Gott, and Jaci Young each recorded runs batted in over the weekend, with Young hitting her fifth home run of the year.

Logger leaders

Jessica Gott leads the squad with a .366 batting average. The junior has 10 doubles, a triple, and three home runs, while recording 22 runs batted in. Jenna Llamas (.345) and Kristi Nagamine (.307) both hit above .300 as well. Jessica Gott, Erica Gott, Haley Gray, Jaci Young, and Kaitlyn Webster have all hit home runs for the Loggers, with Young leading the way with five. She is also second on the squad with 17 RBI. Jaci Young (4-9) leads the Loggers with a 4.15 ERA in the circle. She has struck out 37 batters in 81.0 innings pitched. Erica Gott (5-8) has a 5.56 earned run average, with 37 strikeouts in 66.2 IP.

Scouting the Pioneers (9-20, 9-16 NWC)

Lewis & Clark College most recently swept a four-game series over Pacific, after splitting four games against Willamette. The team hits .263 as a team, led by Stephanie Garcia (.333) and Lindsay Yearman (.333). Tiana Rosario (.306) and Katelyn Duilio (.303) also hit above .300 for the Pioneers. Yearman has a team-high two home runs, and is tied for second on the team with 10 RBI. Lisa Kumasaka leads the Pioneers with 12 runs batted in. Kalin Rooney (4-8) has a 3.10 earned run average. She has struck out 38 batters in 83.2 innings pitched. Kaili Akimseu (3-7) has a 4.36 ERA, with 43 K's in 70.2 IP.

Scouting the Boxers (7-26, 5-18)

Pacific University most recently were swept in a four-game series against Lewis & Clark. The Boxers hit .217 as a team, led by Taylor Nishimura (.368). Amanda Machado (.270) leads the squad with 14 runs batted in and has also hit two home runs. Morgan Bookout (.203) has a team-high three homers. Ashley Martin (6-10) has a 3.44 earned run average, with 44 strikeouts in 99.2 innings pitched.  

Student-Athlete of the Week

Jessica Gott earned the NWC Player of the Week for her play against Pacific. She hit .583 in the three games, including a three-run home run in extra innings which proved the difference in the first game of the series. Jaci Young was named the Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week after throwing 12 scoreless innings, including a complete game shutout, to open the season. 

Under the sun

The Loggers went 4-1 in Arizona during Spring Break, scoring 40 runs in five games. This was not the first time the Loggers had success in the hot weather this year. Puget Sound opened the 2017 season with a six-game trip to Southern California. The team split double headers with Pomona-Pitzer, Chapman, and Occidental.
