Softball set to wrap up season with 4-game series against Lutes

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound softball team is set to wrap up the 2017 season with a home and home four-game series with crosstown rival Pacific Lutheran. The Loggers and Lutes will play two games in Parkland on Friday, before playing a doubleheader in Tacoma on Saturday. Saturday will act as Senior Day for Puget Sound.

Senior Day

Puget Sound's two seniors will be honored on Saturday. Jaci Young and Kristi Nagamine will be recognized for their contributions to the program as they wrap up their four years in a Loggers uniform.

Puget Sound's last games

The Loggers (12-23, 4-19 NWC) traveled to Forest Grove to wrap up a pair of suspended games. Puget Sound first took on Lewis & Clark, winning 4-2, before falling, 9-1, in six innings to Pacific. Jessica Gott had two runs batted in, and Erica Gott threw a complete game victory.

Logger leaders

Jessica Gott leads the squad with a .374 batting average. The junior has 11 doubles, a triple, and three home runs, while recording a team-high 24 runs batted in. Jenna Llamas (.337) and Kristi Nagamine (.304) both hit above .300 as well. Jessica Gott, Erica Gott, Haley Gray, Jaci Young, and Kaitlyn Webster have all hit home runs for the Loggers, with Young leading the way with five. She is also second on the squad with 17 RBI. Young (4-10) also leads the Loggers with a 4.25 ERA in the circle. She has struck out 38 batters in 85.2 innings pitched. Erica Gott (6-8) has a 5.13 earned run average, with 38 strikeouts in 73.2 IP.

Scouting the Lutes (17-13, 13-11 NWC)

Pacific Lutheran University most recently went 1-3 against Whitworth. The Lutes took the final game of the series against the Pirates, 7-1. The team is currently in third place in Northwest Conference standings. The Lutes are hitting .297 as a team, led by Kathryn Hatlen at .391. Samantha Simundson (.376) and Anna Overland (.369) are just behind. Overland leads the squad with five home runs and 34 RBI. Elli Rassbach is 9-5 in the circle, with a 3.03 ERA. She has struck out 42 batters in 97.0 innings and has thrown 13 complete games. Marissa Miller (7-8) has a 3.27 earned run average. She has thrown 11 complete games and 92.0 innings, with 45 strikeouts.

Student-Athlete of the Week

Jessica Gott earned the NWC Player of the Week for her play against Pacific. She hit .583 in the three games, including a three-run home run in extra innings which proved the difference in the first game of the series. Jaci Young was named the Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week after throwing 12 scoreless innings, including a complete game shutout, to open the season. 

Under the sun

The Loggers went 4-1 in Arizona during Spring Break, scoring 40 runs in five games. This was not the first time the Loggers had success in the hot weather this year. Puget Sound opened the 2017 season with a six-game trip to Southern California. The team split double headers with Pomona-Pitzer, Chapman, and Occidental.
