Puget Sound outlasts Whitman in overtime, 89-82

TACOMA, Washington – The No. 6/10 Puget Sound women's basketball team topped No. 15/13 Whitman in overtime for the second time this season, as the Loggers pushed their win streak to 14 games.

Puget Sound (21-1, 13-0 NWC) needed an extra five minutes to beat the Blues (19-3, 10-3 NWC), 89-82, in Memorial Fieldhouse on Friday night. Earlier this season the Loggers beat Whitman on the road, 73-71, in overtime (Jan. 14).

The Loggers and Blues were even at halftime, 41-41, but Puget Sound erupted in the third quarter. The Loggers shot 64.3 percent in the first 10 minutes after the break and outscored Whitman, 30-13, in the quarter. Caitlin Malvar scored nine points during that stretch, while Samone Jackson provided eight.

The Loggers' third quarter was highlighted by a five-point possession. Jackson knocked down a 3-pointer while Meghan Hamel was fouled away from the ball. Hamel hit both of her free throws.

The Blues would not go away quietly. Whitman outscored the Loggers, 26-9, in the fourth quarter. Puget Sound went cold in the fourth, shooting just 13.3 percent from the floor. The Loggers held an 80-78 lead when Jackson missed a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left. Whitman capitalized on the opportunity and got two points to send the game into overtime.

The Blues took an 82-81 lead early in the extra period, but they scored just the one basket through the final five minutes. Jamie Lange made consecutive layups to give the Loggers an 85-82 lead, and Jackson made her free throws down the stretch.

Alexis Noren led all players with 21 points, while Malvar and Jackson netted 16 points, apiece. Jamie Lange recorded a double-double off the bench, scoring 14 points to with 11 rebounds.

The Loggers celebrate their seniors – Katie Holland and Noren – prior to the 4 p.m. tipoff at home against Whitworth on Saturday, Feb. 11.
