Women's basketball falls in conference title game

TACOMA, Wash. – Although the Loggers held a halftime lead, the No. 6/7 Puget Sound women's basketball team fell to No. 21/17 Whitman, 81-72, on Saturday evening in the Northwest Conference Final.

Alexis Noren led all scorers with 24 points, while also recording a game-high six steals. The All-NWC First Teamer also had four assists and a block to pace the Loggers (25-2). Jamie Lange had her seventh-consecutive double-double, scoring 20 points, and pulling down 10 boards. Caitlin Malvar added 13 points and six assists, while Samone Jackson chipped in 12 points.

The Loggers opened the game on a 6-0 run, and held a 21-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. They shot 50.0 percent from the field in the period. Puget Sound led by as many as 14 in the second period, but Whitman (23-4) would outscore the home team 26-16 in the second quarter, to close the gap to 37-35 at halftime.

The third quarter was more of the same for the Blues, who outscored the Loggers 25-12 in the period, holding a 60-49 lead heading into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, the two teams began exchanging baskets, but the Loggers had dug themselves too big of a hole, and Whitman would ultimately win, 81-72, to claim the NWC Tournament title.  

Puget Sound shot 39.4 percent (26-for-66) from the field, while Whitman shot 42.1 percent (24-for-57). The Loggers were 5-for-20 (25.0 percent) from beyond the arc. The Blues were 6-for-16 (37.5 percent) on 3-point shots. Puget Sound were outrebounded 44-35.  

The Loggers will find out their NCAA tournament fate on Monday, February 27. The NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Selection Show begins at 11:30 a.m. There will be a viewing party in the wet classroom in the Athletics & Aquatics Center.
