TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound volleyball team closed out the Puget Sound Premiere by sweeping Trinity (Tex.) at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday. The Loggers lost to the hosting Lutes, 3-1, later in the day.
Puget Sound 3, Trinity (Tex.) 0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-22)
Through no easy feat, the Loggers (3-5) won three consecutive sets over the Tigers. Puget Sound held a 20-15 lead in the first set, but the Tigers, who received 43 votes in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, rallied to even the score, 21-21. An ace by Rachael Garrison followed by a kill from Hannah Stinson gave the Loggers a 23-21 cushion, and Stinson's kill four points later seal the 25-23 win in the opening frame.
The Loggers raced out to a 5-2 lead in the second set, but Trinity battled back and took a 15-14 edge. The Tigers continued to hold an advantage at 20-18, but an ace from Moira McVicar followed by a kill by Emily Convery evened the score.
The score remained tied at 23-23, but consecutive attack errors by the Tigers handed Puget Sound a two-set lead. Similarly to the first set, the Loggers staved off a late run by Trinity in the third set. Puget Sound led 19-12, but the Tigers put together a 9-2 run to tie things up, 21-21. After both sides exchanged points, the Loggers tallied three consecutive points to win the set and the match.
Heather Sangster led all players with 19 kills and added 11 digs. Rachael Garrison came away with a game-high 22 digs, and McVicar had a double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs.
Pacific Lutheran 3, Puget Sound 1 (25-21, 25-17, 22-25, 25-11)
The Lutes (6-3) won the first two sets, but Puget Sound recovered to claim the third set in non-conference action. The Loggers trailed, 5-2, before going on a 6-0 run. Kristen Lane's ace capped off the rally that gave Puget Sound an 8-5 lead. The Loggers' advantage ballooned to 17-11 following a kill by Erika Smith, and Shawna Smith's kill sealed the 25-22 win.
Pacific Lutheran hurried out to a 14-4 lead en route to 25-11 win in the third set. McVicar led the Loggers with 13 digs and was closely followed by Garrison's 12 digs.
Puget Sound opens its Northwest Conference schedule by hosting Whitman on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m.
