TACOMA, Washington – Although the Puget Sound volleyball team held a two-set lead, Linfield rallied for a 3-2 (11-25, 17-25, 25-20, 28-26, 15-12) victory at Memorial Fieldhouse on Friday night.
Kayla Thaller and Moira McVicar both recorded double-doubles for the Loggers (8-11, 5-6 NWC). Thaller finished with 19 assists and 11 digs, while McVicar totaled 21 and 14. Kristen Lane finished with a team-high 19 digs. Shawna Smith and Heather Sangster led the Puget Sound attack with 13 kills and 12 kills, respectively.
The Loggers stormed out of the gates with a 25-11 win in the first set. Puget Sound and Linfield (9-11, 6-5 NWC) were tied early, 5-5, before consecutive Wildcat errors gave the Loggers a two-point lead. Puget Sound took control from there. With the Loggers ahead, 14-11, a kill by Sangster was the first of 10 consecutive points en route to winning the set.
Puget Sound kept the positive momentum in the second set as it jumped out to an 8-2 lead. A kill by Smith capped off a 4-0 run by the Loggers to make it 12-4. Sansgter's kill gave Puget Sound its largest lead of the set, 22-12, and she also provided the set-winning point.
Linfield won the third set, 25-20, and it held a 24-21 lead in the fourth set, but kills by Smith and Katie Rice, and an error by the Wildcats evened the score. The Wildcats went up by one before another kill by Smith, but a kill by Linfield followed by a Loggers' bad set allowed the Wildcats to win the set.
The fifth and decisive set was even, 8-8, but Linfield's 3-0 run from that point proved to be the difference. A kill by Smith and a Linfield error cut Puget Sound's deficit to 11-10, but Linfield continued to stay in front for the victory.
The Loggers return to action when they host Willamette at Memorial Fieldhouse on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m.
