Puget Sound Tennis tested by Jessup

TACOMA, Wash.  – The Puget Sound men's and women's tennis teams came up short to Jessup University on Friday. The Loggers had a packed full pavilion with a standing crowd spilling out from the filled-up bleachers, which helped give the Logger team energy and support for their matches. The Logger men almost walked away with a win in the Tennis Pavilion, but ultimately lost 4-5, and the women fell 1-8.

The Logger men had big wins in singles play. Freshman Jason Rowe, secured a win, playing No. 3 in his first college singles match (6-3, 6-0). Matthew Merzbach and David Lybeck also were victorious on the No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

In the women's doubles, No. 1 team Paige Shinall and Hyla Chatham battled to success with an 8-4 win. Freshman Ella Parker and sophomore Zoe Richter fought hard in their singles matches but lost in three sets.

Head coach Matthew Simons gave some insight on the match stating "Jessup University is a Division 2 school so we knew this was going to be a tough match. Our main goal is to prepare for the long days at the ITA tournament coming up in the next two weeks for the men's and women's team. Jessup was just what we needed to push us and see what it will take to compete at the highest level...looking forward to seeing what we do this season."

The tennis teams compete next in the ITA Regional on September 29th - October 1st in Newberg, Oregon at George Fox University.
