FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The Puget Sound men's swimming team performed a third place finish with a score of 497.5, while the women's team came in fifth after 36 events in the Northwest Conference Championships final day on Sunday. On the men's side, Whitworth won with a score fo 770.5, while Whitman won on the women's side with a score of 620.5.
A team of
Will Cabana,
Ethan Schwartz,
Cam Aaselund, and
Emory Burden sprinted to a time of 3:03.61 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, scoring just 2.52 seconds behind the NWC record placed by Whitworth University.
Senior Schwartz scored top marks in the 200-backstroke with a time of 1:50.60. Coming in just .08 seconds behind Schwartz was freshman Cabana with a second place finish, followed by Joshua Cunningham with a third place sweep.
Elijah Grinstead solidified another first place win in the 200-breaststroke swimming in at 2:02.92, almost four seconds faster than his preliminary time set.
Lance Mielke grabbed the second place finish behind Grinstead.
Emory Burden scored faster than his preliminary score placing second in the 100-freestyle final.
For the men's teams, Whitworth Universities Steve Schadt received the honor of coach of the year, while men's swimmer of the year was received by Whitworth's, Zachary Washburn.
Maddy Brennan impressed scoring almost five seconds faster than her top competitors in the 200-butterfly with a time of 2:07.68.
Amy Madsen improved upon her preliminary score pulling in .10 seconds faster than her Whitman competition and scoring third place overall.
The Championships were finalized with the women's 400-free relay in which a team of Madsen,
Elinor Glass,
Annie Sullivan, and
Sara Guillen swam to a second place finish.
Pacific Lutheran Universities Andrew Lum was voted by his peers as the NWC women's coach of the year, while the women's teams had co-swimmers of the year, Kirsti Keppo, Linfield and Shaye Agnew, Whitman.
