PORTLAND, Ore. — The University of Puget Sound men's tennis team put up a fight but ultimately fell 6-1 to Lewis & Clark in Northwest Conference action Saturday at the LC Tennis Dome.
The Loggers (1-5, 1-4 NWC) struggled in doubles play, dropping all three matches. The top pairing of
Jason Rowe and
Will Church fell 6-1 to Wade McDermott and Kai Wills. Meanwhile, the No. 2 duo of
Trent Beckman and
Tyler Blixt managed two games but lost 6-2, and the No. 3 tandem of S. Silverstein and
Vincent Unpingco fell 6-3.
In singles, Rowe provided the lone bright spot for Puget Sound, delivering a commanding 6-4, 6-0 victory over Noah Sutin at the No. 1 position. However, Lewis & Clark (8-2, 5-1 NWC) dominated the rest of the match. McDermott took down Church in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, while Wills cruised past Beckman, 6-1, 6-2.
The Pioneers continued their strong play down the lineup. Arnav Bishnoi blanked Blixt in the second set to win 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, and Max Furman overwhelmed
Conor Blakeney 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5. The tightest match of the day came at No. 6 singles, where
Matthew Merzbach pushed Bennett Gazor to a third-set tiebreaker before falling 6-2, 3-6, 11-9.
Puget Sound will look to bounce back in its next match next weekend, when they host Whitman at home.
