TACOMA, Wash. – Despite a strong start in doubles play, the University of Puget Sound Loggers couldn't hold off George Fox University on Saturday, falling 5-2 in a non-conference men's tennis matchup.
Puget Sound (2-9) grabbed an early lead when
Jason Rowe and
Will Church took care of business at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-3. But George Fox (8-5) responded quickly, securing the next two doubles matches, with Keita Shoji and Zach Moore edging out
Trent Beckman and
Jackson Stumpf in a tight 7-5 battle at No. 2, while Luis Hernandez and Jackson Whittaker wrapped up a 6-4 win for GFU at No. 3.
In singles, Moore led the way for the Bruins with a gritty three-set comeback at No. 1, overcoming Rowe 1-6, 6-2, 7-5. Shoji followed suit at No. 2, rallying past Church 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Whittaker and Hernandez each won in straight sets at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, clinching the overall Bruin team victory.
The Loggers salvaged two points, with Stumpf dominating No. 5 singles in a 6-0, 6-3 performance, and
Vincent Unpingco picked up a win by forfeit at No. 6.
Puget Sound takes on Linfield tomorrow, with the match set to start at 10:00 a.m.
