SPOKANE, Wash. – Despite a strong start in doubles play and a dominant performance from
Jason Rowe at No. 1 singles, the Puget Sound men's tennis team came up short against Whitworth, falling 5-2 on Sunday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Loggers (3-12, 2-5 NWC) opened the day with momentum, claiming victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Trent Beckman and
Jackson Stumpf combined for a 6-3 win at the second line, while
Tyler Blixt and
Vincent Unpingco rolled to a 6-2 victory at No. 3. Whitworth (6-14, 4-3 NWC) salvaged the top doubles point with a 6-2 win from Ryan Ashley and Matthew Morrison over Rowe and
Will Church.
With a 2-1 lead entering singles play, Puget Sound couldn't sustain the pace.
Rowe delivered a convincing 6-4, 6-0 win at the top spot to secure the Loggers' only singles point. The senior showed poise and control, closing out Morrison in straight sets.
Whitworth took over from there, winning the next five singles matches. Ashley defeated Church 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Easton Weir bested
Carson Ward 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3, and Hossack topped Beckman 6-2, 6-2 on court four. In two three-set thrillers, Matt Froslan slipped past Stumpf 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 at No. 5, and Colby Cinqmars rallied to beat Unpingco 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6, delivering the 2-5 loss to the Loggers.
