Four Athletes Earn NWC Athlete of the Week Honor

HILLSBORO, Ore. -- An impressive four Puget Sound scholar-athletes landed on the Northwest Conference Athlete of the Week teams, which was four times more than any other conference school.

Four athletes from all four sports that competed this weekend won the prestigious Athlete of the Week award, as the Loggers dominated their competition in opening-weekend play. 

To recap: 

Men's and Women's Cross Country both won the Puget Sound Invite on Saturday, August 30th, with Cian Monaghan and Emily Moore both taking home the individual title. 
Women's soccer went undefeated in Texas against Southwestern and Mary Hardin Baylor, toppling the Pirates 2-0 on Friday, August 29th, before coming back against the Crusaders to earn a point on a rainy Sunday, August 31st. 
Men's soccer opened up their season at home against Evergreen State, scoring two goals in the first five minutes and shutting out the Geoducks 4-0. 
Women's Volleyball hosted the Puget Sound Premiere, and swept cross-town rival Pacific Lutheran for the first time since 2016. 

With this incredible weekend came four incredible athletes. This week, the NWC honored: 

Volleyball: Akira Anderson (Defensive) - Anderson had 56 digs and 7 aces in three games, providing an impressive defensive performance against several tough schools, including two that finished the 2024 season in the top 50 in NPI rankings.
Women's Soccer: Gianna Maldonado (Defensive) - Maldonado had a season-high eight saves against MHB on Aug. 31st, and a clean sheet on Aug. 29th, only allowing one goal on the weekend and helping the Loggers stay undefeated. 
Men's Soccer: Rhys Foote (Offensive) - Foote had two goals against Evergreen State, opening the scoring in the third minute before scoring off a direct free kick in the 62nd minute. He led the team in shots (6) and shots on goal (5) as well.
Men's Cross Country: Cian Monaghan - Monaghan won the Puget Sound Invite with an impressive time of 15:20.2, outpacing the next finisher by over 25 seconds. He also helped the team start the season with an impressive victory.
