VANCOUVER, B.C. - - The University of Puget Sound men's and women's tennis teams traveled north this weekend for a challenging doubleheader against the University of British Columbia. While the Thunderbirds earned 7-0 victories in both matches, the weekend provided the Loggers with elite-level competition and valuable team bonding as they prepare for the spring conference schedule.
How it Happened
Facing a UBC men's program fresh off a Canadian national championship, the Loggers showed resilience from the opening matches. The highlight came in doubles, where Jason Rowe and Jackson Stumpf earned an impressive 8-5 victory over UBC's top pair in the first round. The momentum carried into singles play, where the duo pushed their opponents in hard-fought matches.
On the woman's side, Kaylee Yamada delivered a standout performance, despite the team scoreline. Coaching staff praised Yamada for playing some of her best tennis of the season, as she displayed grit and composure against the deep and talented Thunderbird roster.
The trip marked the first time the men's and women's programs have traveled to Canada together, an experience that emphasized connection and team culture- a priority for Head Coach Matthew Simons. "UBC is tough- top to bottom they were loaded. We fought hard, but most importantly learned a lot. Matches like these help us refine our training plan heading into the spring."
The weekend also produced a memorable travel story, as a snack of figs in the women's team vehicle caught the attention of border canine units, resulting in a brief search and delay before the Loggers were cleared to return home.
What Happens Next
The Loggers will return to the practice courts over the next few weeks to apply lessons learned from the weekend. Puget Sound officially opens its home schedule on Saturday, February 14, at 11 AM., when the Loggers host Linfield.
