Richter and Friess Impress in Tough Matchup with Portland State

| By:

TACOMA, Wash. - - The University of Puget Sound women's tennis team faced a tough opponent on Saturday, hosting Division I Portland State. While the Loggers ultimately fell 0-7 to the Vikings, the day provided critical adjustments for the program ahead of conference play.

How it Happened

Head coach Matthew Simons intentionally scheduled tough non-conference opponents to open the season. Following the match, Simons praised his team's performance against a high-level program.

"I could not be more proud of the emotional maturity the team exhibited from top to bottom," said Simons. "I wanted to test and push the team with quality opponents before conference match play starts."

The day opened with a high intensity doubles session. Although the Vikings took the doubles point without dropping a set, the Loggers were able to force long, tactical rallies. This performance at the net set a competitive tone for later matches, proving that Puget Sound could maintain a rhythm against D1 pace.

The highlight of the afternoon came in the individual matchups, where senior Zoe Richter demonstrated her veteran experience and strong mental game throughout her match. Freshman Meredith Friess continued her impressive start to her collegiate career. Friess opened her match with aggressive play and a level of focus that kept her Portland State opponent from ever finding a solid rhythm.

"Friess started off strong and never let her opponent get comfortable," Simons noted. "Richter made great adjustments and fought hard…I like what I am seeing tactically and mentally from this group."

The Loggers view this experience as a vital building block. Facing the power and precision of a Division I program like Portland State serves as an important time of preparation for the upcoming Northwest Conference schedule.

What Happens Next

The team officially opens Northwest Conference action on the road, traveling to McMinnville, Oregon, to take on Linfield University on Saturday, February 14. First serve is scheduled for 11 AM.
