Gelder Leads Singles Charge in Narrow Loss to Whitworth

| By:

TACOMA, Wash. - - In a match that featured multiple tiebreakers and a strong showing in doubles play, the Logger men's tennis team fell just short in a 5-2 score against Whitworth University on Saturday morning.

How it Happened

The Loggers set an aggressive tone early, stunning the Pirates by claiming two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day. At the No.1 position, Jason Rowe and Jackson Stumpf outlasted their opponents in a 6-4 battle.

The excitement continued at the No. 3 spot, where Sam Lowery and Aidan Kresko showcased their chemistry. The duo stayed composed under pressure to secure a 6-4 win of their own, clinching the doubles point for Puget Sound.

The intensity increased as the match moved to singles. The highlight of the afternoon came at the No. 1 flight, where Rowe engaged in a three-set marathon against Whitworth. After dropping the first set 7-5, Rowe stormed back to take the second 6-2. The third set went to a grueling tiebreaker, where Rowe narrowly fell 7-6 (7-5) in one of the most competitive matches seen on the home court this year.

At the No. 5 spot Reef Gelder provided a spark for the Loggers. Gelder stayed in control from the opening service, using consistent baseline play to wear down the Pirates in a 6-3, 6-4 win. His performance provided a major lift for the team, marking a clean point in the singles column.

On court two, Stumpf battled through several long deuce games against Ryan Ashley, while Gavin Dille showed promise at the No. 3 spot, holding his own in a competitive 6-2, 6-3 contest. Vincent Unpingco and Lowery also gave a great effort in the No. 4 and No. 6 slots, despite the Pirates' late surge to seal the team victory.
