UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash.—The Puget Sound baseball team wrapped up its three-game series with Northwest Conference leader Linfield Sunday, falling 8-0 in the rubber match at Curtis High School in University Place, Wash.
The Wildcats again took an early lead, scoring two runs in the first and third innings and one in the second. In the first frame, the two leadoff Wildcats reached base, and Nick Fisher drove home the first run with a single. Two batters later, Eric Lawson scored to give the Wildcats a two run lead before the Loggers had an at bat. In the second frame, Lawson ripped an RBI single, and both Clayton Truex and Wylie scored for Linfield in the third.
The Loggers had a couple of chances to score in the middle of the game, putting two runners on base in each of the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Nathan Backes walked and Jeff Walton singled down the right field line to move Backes up 90 feet. The next two Loggers made outs, though, and the inning was over. In the fifth, Nickolas Alarcio ripped a pinch hit single to left and moved to third base on a single by Chris Zerio. Zerio moved up to second base on a wild pitch, but Alarcio remained on third. The inning ended on a ground out to Linfield pitcher Aaron Thomassen, closing the Loggers' chances in the frame.
Linfield scored its final three runs in the top of the sixth and top of the seventh to take an 8-0 lead, where the score would stay for the final two innings. Walton led the Loggers with two hits on the day before being lifted for pinch hitter Ian Hughes. On the mound, Freshman Chris Moreno threw 2.0 innings of hitless ball, his longest appearance of the season. Moreno struck out two and walked just one batter. Kian Kurokawa also threw 2.0 hitless innings, pitching the eighth and ninth frames for Puget Sound.
For the Wildcats, Lawson tallied three hits while Fisher added two RBIs. On the hill, Thomassen threw 7.0 innings, allowing no runs while striking out six Loggers. Linfield (21-3, 14-1) returns home to McMinnville, Ore., for a three-game series against Pacific Lutheran next weekend.
The Loggers (7-13, 5-7 NWC) hit the road for their next three-game series, a conference matchup at George Fox. Games one and two against the Bruins will take place Saturday, April 5 at Morse Field in Newberg, Ore., with the first pitch of the doubleheader slated for 12:00 p.m.
