THOUSAND OAKS, California – The Puget Sound baseball team lost at No. 10 Cal Lutheran on Saturday afternoon, 7-3. The second game of the scheduled double-header was rained out.
The Loggers (1-1), found themselves in early deficit after the Kingsmen (2-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Puget Sound quickly struck back. Nathan Backes (1-for-4, R, 2B) led off the top of the second inning with a double and scored on a single by Layne Croney (2-for-4, RBI, SB).
The Loggers claimed a 2-1 lead in the third inning when Connor Savage (2-for-5, R) led off with a single and advanced to third base following a sac bunt and a wild pitch. Chris Zerio's (2-for-5, RBI) RBI single plated Savage.
Cal Lutheran scored two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth en route to its win. Six of the seven runs were earned.
Nick Funyak (2-for-4, R, 2B) doubled in the eighth inning and later scored on a throwing error for the Loggers' third run. He joined Croney, Savage, and Zerio in finishing with multiple hits. The Loggers totaled 11 hits in all.
Puget Sound looks to bounce back at Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday at 12 p.m. The Loggers beat the Sagehens, 9-4, in the season-opener on Friday.
