LOS ANGELES, California – Collin Maier was dominant on the mound and Ian Hughes hit his fourth home run of the season, but the Puget Sound baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at No. 17 Occidental on Saturday afternoon.
Puget Sound 1, Occidental 2
Collin Maier tossed 8.1 innings without allowing an earned run, but the Tigers were able to push two unearned runs across the plate for the 2-1 win.
Maier struck out four and allowed just four hits and no walks. Saturday marked Maier's third start without yielding an earned run this season.
The Loggers and Tigers were locked in a scoreless tie entering the eighth inning, when Ian Hughes led off the top of the eighth with a solo home run to left field. Hughes is now tied with Nickolas Alarcio and Nathan Backes for the team lead with four home runs.
Occidental rallied for two runs in the ninth inning for the walk-off win.
Puget Sound 2, Occidental 10
The Loggers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Occidental rattled off six unanswered runs en route to a 10-2 win.
Cal Muramaru began the game with a leadoff single, and he moved into scoring position following a sac bunt by Nickolas Alarcio. Chris Zerio followed with an RBI single to right-center field to give the Loggers the early edge.
The Tigers took the lead with two runs in the home half of the first, and they added four more in the second.
The Loggers got one more run in the third inning after Muramaru was hit by pitch, moved to second on Zerio's single, stole third, and took home on an error by the catcher.
The Loggers play Occidental once more on Sunday, April 17, at 11 a.m. The weekend concludes with a 3 p.m. contest against Redlands.
