TACOMA, Washington – Brennan Schon's touchdown reception with 4:25 left in the fourth quarter gave the Puget Sound football team its first lead of the game as the Loggers beat crosstown rival Pacific Lutheran, 6-2, at Baker Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Loggers' first home victory over the Lutes (1-6, 1-4 NWC) since 1979 also seals Puget Sound's first winning season since 2006. The Loggers improve to 5-2 overall, and their 4-1 mark in the Northwest Conference is good for second place.
The Loggers began the game-winning drive on their own 32-yard line with 6:32 on the clock. Following a couple of short passes and an incompletion, Puget Sound faced fourth-and-long on its end of the field. Quarterback Hans Fortune stepped up in the big moment and threw a strike to Schon down the middle of field as the Loggers got a new set of downs on the Lutes' 45-yard line.
Fortune connected with Peter Bell for a 27-yard play down to the Lutes' 18 yard line, and set up the game-winning score to Schon. Puget Sound's two-point conversion was unsuccessful.
Pacific Lutheran's ensuing possession went for 55 yards on 12 plays, including a successful conversion on fourth-and-10. However, the Lutes faced fourth-and-long once more, this time from the Loggers' 13-yard line, but Matt Gilbert was there to break up a pass and put the Loggers into victory formation.
The Lutes got on the board with a safety in the second quarter. The Puget Sound defense stopped the Lutes on fourth-and-one from the Loggers' five yard, but with a short field to their backs the Loggers surrendered a sack in the end zone.
Puget Sound nearly got in the board during its first possession of the game. Sawyer Petre lined up for a 44-yard field-goal attempt, a daunting task given the wet and windy conditions. Petre's boot looked promising, but came up just short as it banged off the crossbar.
Schon led all players with eight receptions for 119 yards, and Bell added 72 yards receiving. Chris Beaulaurier led the defensive effort with a game-high 16 tackles, and Doug Owusu came away with an interception for Puget Sound.
The Loggers hit the road for a battle with No. 2 Linfield on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m.
