TACOMA, Washington – Stellan Roberts nearly matched his career-high in scoring, but the Puget Sound men's basketball team lost in overtime against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 85-81, in Memorial Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon.
Roberts totaled 30 points for the Loggers (3-3). His career-high is 31 points against Willamette in Feb. 2019. He shot 10-for-19 from the floor against the Blugolds (7-1), and pulled down eight rebounds. Cal Hansen netted 16 points in 30 minutes, and John Misel scored 10 points in 30 minutes off the bench.
Both teams shot the ball well, as the Loggers finished 50.0-percent from the floor and the Blugolds went for 49.3-percent. Puget Sound outrebounded UW-Eau Claire, 36-29, but the Loggers committed more turnovers, 16-5.
The Blugolds held a 68-67 lead with 50 seconds left in regulation, but Riley Nichol drew a foul and connected on both free-throws to flip a one-point game to the Loggers' advantage. Puget Sound got a defensive stop with Grant Erickson pulling down a crucial rebound, and Roberts subsequently went to the line for two. He made both attempts to give the Loggers a 71-68 lead.
However, UW-Eau Claire hit a deep 3-pointer with just a few seconds remaining in regulation, sending Puget Sound into its first overtime game of the season.
John Misel opened the scoring in the extra period by hitting a 3-pointer. Later in overtime, the Blugolds hit a layup, got a defensive stop, and then drilled a 3-pointer to take a 78-76 lead with just under two minutes left. They held on to the lead for the rest of the game.
The Loggers make a return to California, where they tipoff at Redlands Saturday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m.
