TACOMA, Wash. - A busy first half set the scene as the Puget Sound Loggers fell to the 23rd-ranked North Park Vikings, 3-2, in an NCAA Division III men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon on East Athletic Field in Tacoma, Wash.
The Loggers got on the scoreboard early when Alex Lehecka (Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison) sent in a pass to a speedy Kyle Benson (Mukilteo, Wash./Kamiak), who fired in a shot from the top of the 18 yard box to give Puget Sound the early 1-0 lead. The Vikings evened it up in the 17th minute when the Loggers were called for a handful just barely in the box and the referee awarded a penalty kick, which NPU's Kristoffer Grahn successfully converted.
Puget Sound was awarded a penalty kick of thier own just a few minutes later when Cole Peterson (Great Falls, Mont./C.M. Russell) was knocked down in the box and senior midfielder Derek Woodworth (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) put the ball in the net for a 2-0 Puget Sound lead.
North Park showed why they had earned their national ranking just over two minutes later when Miles Colago fired in a shot from outside of the box that ricocheted around the upper left corner and into the net as the Vikings tied the game up. The Vikings would get the eventual game winner in the 35th minute when Grahn received a pass from Sebastian Pilat and knocked the ball into the goal.
Both defenses took over in the second half as neither offense had many chances for another goal. The teams showed their physical sides however as three yellow cards were shown in the second half, one to North Park and two to Puget Sound.
The Loggers will now turn their sights towards the Northwest Conference season, which will begin on Saturday at Linfield in McMinnville, Ore.
