TACOMA, Washington – Landon Gauthier netted a hat-trick in the first 11 minutes of the match as the Puget Sound men's soccer team surged past Linfield 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Logger offense, led by Gauthier, started the game hot. In the eighth minute, Gauthier scored on a penalty kick. Less than a minute later, Gauthier headed in a corner kick from Josh Sonico. Gauthier netted the hat-trick as the Loggers were awarded another penalty kick in the 11th minute. Before halftime, Stewart Miller increased the Logger lead to four as he headed in a throw in from Tristan Stevenson. Wrapping up the scoring, Pablo Alguindigue recorded his second of the year by firing in a shot from 25 yards out.
"After losing yesterday, we knew today was a very important game. I'm very pleased with how the boys responded," said Head Coach Reece Olney. "It was nice to get every healthy player into the game and further their development."
In the first half, the Loggers (6-3-1, 3-1 NWC) got off to a fast start with Gauthier recording a hat-trick 11 minutes into the game. Two of Gauthier's goals came on penalty kicks. The third came on a header off a corner kick from Sonico. The Wildcats (3-4-1, 1-2-1 NWC) fired shots on goal that forced goalkeeper Nathan King to make four saves in the half. To bring the halftime lead to 4-0, Miller scored on a throw in from Stevenson.
The Logger defense, in the second half, held the Wildcats to one shot on goal to secure the shutout. In the 78th minute, Alguindigue sweetened the win with a goal from 25 yards out. With the final whistle, Puget Sound defeated Linfield 5-0.
The Loggers outshot the Wildcats (12-11) and had more corner kicks (6-3). King made five saves in the match. Linfield picked up one yellow card in each half.
Puget Sound looks to keep its offense hot as it travels to play against Whitman and Whitworth on Saturday, Oct. 4 and Sunday, Oct. 5.
