White heads in game winner to push Loggers past Linfield

TACOMA, Washington – In a back and forth battle, the Puget Sound men's soccer team came away with the 3-2 victory over Linfield on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Andrew White scored two header goals in the match including the game winner.

Cameron Lorek scored the lone goal of the first half in the 30th minute off a pass from Sean Ryan. In the second half, White scored two header goals to give Puget Sound the win. In the 71st minute, Sam Zisette crossed the ball into the box off a pass from Ryan. The Linfield goalkeeper attempted to punch out the ball but it found the head of White for a goal instead. Nine minutes later, Puget Sound was awarded a free kick. Sam Naatz took the kick and again, White's head sent the ball into the net for the game winner. Goalkeeper Nathan King made four crucial saves in the match.

To start the game, Puget Sound (11-3-2, 8-1-1 NWC) goalkeeper King made three early saves on shots from Linfield (6-7-1, 4-5-1 NWC). In the 27th minute, Lorek entered the game and made an immediate impact for the Loggers. Minutes later, Lorek received a pass from Ryan and dribbled around defenders before firing the ball past the Wildcat goalie. Puget Sound entered halftime with the 1-0 lead.

The second half was a back and forth battle as Linfield leveled the score to 1-1 in the 69th minute. Fighting back, the Loggers took the lead minutes later on White's header goal from Zisette and Ryan. Not giving up, the Wildcats tied the game again at 2-2 in the 78th minute. The Loggers were awarded a free kick in the 80th minute taken by Naatz. White then headed the free kick into the net for his sixth goal of the year and his third game winner of the season. Puget Sound held onto the lead in the final ten minutes to win the conference match 3-2.

The Loggers outshot the Wildcats (16-12) and had more corner kicks (12-7). Linfield picked up two yellow cards, one in each half. White led the Loggers in shots with four.

Puget Sound faces Willamette at home tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 26 at 2:30pm.
