NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas—The Puget Sound softball team played the first two games of its spring break trip to Texas Tuesday, playing an early doubleheader against Texas Lutheran Univeristy in New Braunfels, Texas. The host Bulldogs won both games, taking the first game 10-1 in five innings and the second 10-5 in the regulation seven.
Game One: Texas Lutheran 10, Puget Sound 1 (5 innings)
After Logger pitcher Jaci Young got TLU leadoff hitter Ashley Jacobson to pop out, the Bulldogs put the next three runners on to load the bases. A fielders choice gave the Loggers two outs in the inning, but Bulldog catcher Hope Estes knocked a grand slam to empty the bases and give TLU a four-run lead after the first inning.
The Bulldogs added on four more runs in the bottom of the second inning, taking an 8-0 advantage after two. Puget Sound got on the scoreboard in the next half inning, scoring one run in the top of the third. Young led the frame off with a walk and stole second in the next at bat. She took third on a wild pitch, and then Megan Campbell brought her home with a single to right field. The RBI was Campbell's fifth of the season, the most on the squad.
Texas Lutheran countered with two more runs in the bottom of the frame for a 10-1 lead. Puget Sound threatened once more in the top of the fifth when Young drew another walk and Taylor Jones dropped a bunt single to get two runners on with one out, but the next two batters made outs to end the game.
Young threw all four innings in game one for the Loggers, allowing 10 runs – seven of which were earned – while striking out three batters. She fell to 0-6 on the season, while Pizana Veny tallied the win for Texas Lutheran. Veny threw 3.1 innings, allowing one run and striking out five for the Bulldogs.
Game Two: Texas Lutheran 10, Puget Sound 5
In the second game of the doubleheader, Puget Sound jumped out to a four run lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jenica Holt and Campbell each drove in one of those RBIs, and they both made their way home later in the inning. The Bulldogs were quick to come back, however, beginning the bottom of the first with a series of doubles to propel them to a 6-4 lead over the Loggers at the end of the first inning.
That score stood until the top of the fourth when the Bulldogs plated one run despite having the bases juiced as Campbell, the Loggers' pitcher, got Jennifer Garcia to ground out to end the inning. The Bulldogs added another run in the top of the fifth to make the score 8-4.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, but the Loggers took one back in the bottom of the seventh off of a double from Olivia Turner. The Loggers were unable to bring in another run, ending the game after the bottom of the seventh. The final score of game two was 10-5.
The Loggers tallied ten hits from seven players and four RBIs in game two of the series. Campbell rallied the bats of the Loggers, leading the team with three hits. She also got the start in the circle, pitching the complete game with two strikeouts.
Puget Sound (0-15, 0-13 NWC) continues its Texas swing with a doubleheader at Trinity Wednesday, March 19. Those games will begin at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. Pacific time (5:00 and 7:00 p.m. Central) in San Antonio, Texas.
