Shaw, Young belt home runs, but Loggers lose two to Pacific

TACOMA, WashingtonJaci Young hit her second home run of the season and Jessica Shaw belted her first long ball of the year, but the Puget Sound softball team lost both ends of a home doubleheader against Pacific on Sunday afternoon.

Puget Sound 3, Pacific 9

The Boxers (27-11, 17-7) carried a  7-0 lead into the fifth inning, when the Loggers (4-32, 1-23 NWC) broke through for three runs. Kayla Andrus (3-for-3, 2B, R) began the home half of the fifth with a double to left, and Shaw (1-for-3) followed with a single up the middle. Andrus held up at third base, but the centerfield's throw skipped past the catcher, which allowed Andrus just enough time to sprint home and score as Shaw took second base on the play.

Haley Gray (0-for-0, R) came in to pinch hit for Shaw, and Kasey Stern's (0-for-1) sac bunt moved Gray up to third base. Jessica Gott (0-for-4, R) followed by reaching base on an error by the third baseman, but Gray stayed on the bag during the play. With runners on the corners, Gott took off for second base and Gray took home as the catcher throw down to second. Erica Gott's (2-for-3, RBI, 2B) double to centerfield later in inning scored her sister, Jessica, for the Loggers' final run.

Puget Sound 6, Pacific 9

Bailee Larson (0-for-2, 2 R) drew a two-out walk in the second inning and Young (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) followed by crushing her second home run of the year to left field, giving Puget Sound an early 2-0 lead.

The Boxers rallied to take a 6-2 lead, but the Loggers got a run back in the fourth inning when Lisa Colombo's (0-for-3, RBI) sac fly scored Larson. Pacific held a 9-3 lead after six-and-a-half inning, but Puget Sound showed resiliency in the bottom of the seventh.

Erica Gott (2-for-4, R) and Kristi Nagamine (3-for-4, R, 2B) hit consecutive one-out singles, setting up Shaw's (1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) first home run of the year, which easily cleared the centerfield wall.

The Loggers return to action at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, April 18, for a doubleheader that starts at 12 p.m.
