Colombo gets season-best three hits in game, but Loggers fall to PLU

TACOMA, WashingtonLisa Colombo grabbed a season-best three hits in a game while Jaci Young went 4-for-6 with two runs between two games on Saturday, but the Puget Sound softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at Pacific Lutheran.

Puget Sound 3, Pacific Lutheran 8

The Loggers (4-34, 1-25 NWC) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning, starting with a leadoff walk by Jessica Shaw. Young's (2-for-3, R) first hit of the day was a single that put two runners on for Paige Schaffer (1-for-3, R), who also singled to load the bases.

Amber Popovich (1-for-2, 2 RBI) followed with a two-run single as pinch-runner Hailey Gray and Young came around to scored. Schaffer also came around to score on the play following a throwing error by the Lutes' (21-17, 14-12 NWC) right fielder.

Pacific Lutheran answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the second. The Lutes scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to put the game out of reach.

Colombo finished the game 3-for-4.

Puget Sound, Pacific Lutheran 11 (5 inn.)

The Lutes busted the game wide open early with a 10-spot in the first inning, but the Loggers began to chip away in the third when Jessica Gott (1-for-2, R, RBI) - who was hit by a pitch -scored on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Young (2-for-3, R) led off the fourth inning with a single, and later scored on a base knock by Gott. Colombo (1-for-3, R) singled in the fourth inning and later scored on a fielder's choice by Schaffer (1-for-3, RBI).

The Loggers host PLU for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 19, at 12 p.m. Puget Sound will honor senior Marissa Jeffers before the first pitch.
