Andrus and Gott collect four hits, Loggers fall to Bearcats

SALEM, Oregon – The Loggers dropped a pair of games to Willamette (4-0, 4-0 NWC) on Sunday. Puget Sound fell, 8-3, before losing 8-2 to wrap up the opening Northwest Conference weekend.

Kayla Andrus hit a home run for the Loggers (0-8, 0-4 NWC). She and Jessica Gott collected four hits each over the two games. Kristi Nagamine, Mckenna Johnson, and Haley Gray had two hits, while Erica Gott, Amber Popovich, Amanda Fehr, and Jessica Shimoda each recorded a hit on the day.

Willamette 8, Puget Sound 3

The Loggers and Bearcats remained scoreless through the first four frames. Puget Sound then took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI by Amber Popovich.

The Bearcats took the lead back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on three hits. The home team added to their lead in the six inning, adding five runs to take a 8-1 lead. 

The Loggers staged a seventh inning comeback, scoring two runs in the inning on a two-run home run by Kayla Andrus. Jessica Gott then singled and advanced to third base, but she was ultimately stranded, and the Bearcats earned the win.

Jaci Young (0-4) took the loss for the Loggers. She threw 5.0 innings, allowing three runs and striking out one. Jessica Gott  threw the final 1.0 innings, allowing five runs.

Willamette 8, Puget Sound 2

The Bearcats jumped on the board early, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Willamette extended their lead in the second inning, scoring five runs to go up 7-0.  

The Loggers kept the Bearcats off the board in the third and fourth inning, before getting two runs back in the fifth inning. Amanda Fehr hit a two-RBI single to left center field, scoring Haley Gray and Mckenna Johnson.

Willamette got back one run in the bottom of the inning, giving the home team a 8-2 lead Puget Sound would get runners on base in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to bring them around to score.

Jaci Young (0-5) threw the first 1.1 innings, giving up seven runs (five earned). Kayla Andrus threw the final 4.2 innings, giving up one run (zero earned).

The Loggers will next have their home opener. Puget Sound will host Pacific on Saturday, March 5. The double header is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
